Forecast for the online gaming French market

After the announcement of a new Internet law in France which will finish with the existing online gaming industry monopoly and at the same time will legalize the sector, the consulting firm MECN undertook a deep research project to evaluate the impact of this news.

The study’s results forecast a considerable growth in the online gaming industry, including the online poker and online casino sectors. In fact, it is estimated that in 2015 the whole gaming industry will be valuated €17 billion.
Moreover, a good prove of how well is being received the new Internet law is the fact that two thirds of the operators interviewed by MECN have shown a clear interest in the opening of the French market, which they define as a key market.

The Internet Law in France

Nowadays, a fifth of the total French population is gambling online even though the sector is still not legalized. This number is believed to increase in the following years. That is why the National Assembly of the French Republic is trying to approve as soon as possible a new Internet Law, which will help to regulate the activity and will finish with the monopoly existing in the sector at the moment. The Authority of Online Games Regulation (ARJEL) will be in charge of providing the licence to the new operators, which can only be specialized in three sectors: horse racing, sports betting or poker rooms. We will still have to wait a few months to see which impact this new law will have in the online casinos and poker rooms which are so popular in the country.
